We were Christmas shopping one pleasant morning when, on the spur of the moment, we decided to have lunch whilst we were out on our travels. As we passed the Bulls Head on Washway Road in Sale we remembered reading that it had been recently refurbished and had re-opened as a gastro pub, so the choice was practically made for us. Sale is never the easiest place to park in but as it was Sunday afternoon we were able to park close by.

The renovation has been well done and the place is spacious and comfortable. Th ere is an area set aside and laid up for diners. Th ere were few people in and the pub and restaurant were quiet. We had a drink at the bar whilst we perused the extensive menu.

There is a good selection of starters, main courses and desserts. Everything is home made (the landlord is also the chef) and, being Sunday, there is a full roast dinner, fully trimmed, available with a generous cut from the joint of your choice.

The wine selection is not extensive but adequate and well priced. We ordered a bottle of Chilean Merlot, which was fi ne. I ordered a delicious vegetable soup and my good lady had a tasty pate. We both had roast dinners, mine with pork and apple sauce, hers with beef and Yorkshire pudding. Both were tasty and there was plenty on the plates. For pudding we both had warm apple pie and custard, an easy choice after a good roast dinner. Th e staff were friendly and the service was good. Th e total bill came to just £42 so was excellent value for money.

Will we return? Yes, good value for money.
