We went to see a show at Waterside Arts Centre, next to the Town Hall in Sale, a hidden gem if ever there was one. As the show started at 8.00pm we thought we had plenty of time for an early bite of dinner and chose the nearby Kings Ransom Pub.
This is a Greene King Pub situated alongside the Bridgewater Canal, opposite Sale Metrolink Station. It is an interesting design in the style of an older up - and - down pub with lots of seating in booths, nooks & crannies and a large beer garden next to the canal at the rear.
It used to be a local joke that it cost a King’s Ransom to frequent this particular hostelry and I am pleased to lay this unjust rumour to rest; the beers, wines and food are reasonably priced.
We chose a bottle of nicely priced Merlot and I went off to the bar to obtain this and open a tab so that we might indulge in the wine as we chose our food. It took me fifteen minutes. This was a busy bar with a queue for food and drink and just two bar staff having trouble with the credit card system.
When I got back to our table I discovered I had purchased a higher priced Merlot than the one I set out for. I didn’t notice there were two Merlot’s on the wine list, the staff didn’t advise or ask me which I wished to purchase and I couldn’t be bothered to queue again to exchange it.
Time was slipping away and as we were nervous about how long it would take to get served, remembering the show at 8.00pm, we decided to settle on a main course only, and a wise move this turned out to be as there was another queue to be endured to place the order.
My friend had warm shredded duck and salad and I had what they called ‘Hunter’s Chicken’, a mixture of cheese, bacon and chicken breast. Both dishes were adequate but nothing to get excited about.
Then one final wait at the bar to pay the bill, around £30, and we were off to an excellent show, on time.
The pub was busy with lots of people eating and drinking, and I got the distinct feeling that the organisation for those drinking surpassed that of the queuing diners.
Will we return?
Just for a drink.
